THE FADING OF A KING
By Finn
This photo is of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial wall outside the Montgomery Center for Civil Rights. The Civil Rights Memorial is dedicated to 41 people who were killed in the struggle for integration and the equal treatment of all people, regardless of race, during the 1954-1968 Civil Rights movement in the United States. The wall has water running down a quote by Dr. King. The quote reads,
We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream. (King, 1965)
In this photo, the majority of the name is blurred on purpose. This is intended to symbolize the fading of Dr. King. My sensor originally interpreted the wall as a deep blue, so it took a bit of playing with the color to give it a black and white look without taking all of the color from it. To me, the white on black text is symbolizing the light in the dark: the minorities fighting for a place on the wall. And in my opinion, the water represents a calm after a storm, embodying the idea of moving forward. Moving forward is still so important because it isn't over; we need to realize just how far we still need to go.
