THE ETERNAL FLAME
By Joe
I am sitting at the memorial for Martin Luther King Jr. looking at his and his wife, Coretta's, graves. I look at the eternal flame with its glow of orange and blue with stones under it as I sit listening to the water rush down the steps of the grave. The flames seem to grow bigger and higher. I think of the history we have learned of MLK and that he showed that young men and women can make a change.
I think back to the beginning of the trip, and I think of biking by his house then. Again, I see the flame rising. I was hoping that I could learn more about MLK and what he did to support his family why he was being a activist and protesting, and now I am here at the King Institute, looking at his memorial. I hope that I can study more about MLK's “I Have A Dream Speech” on the days to come on this trip. I look at the eternal flame, and I see that it is turning a lot more orange, unlike the blue that I saw when I first came here. I think it is because of wind.
I look at MLK's grave and I think that he is right there. I see the flowers below his grave, and I also see the crisp blue water of the memorial. I think back to flying here, not knowing I was going to be here, but this is a once in a lifetime experience that I cannot miss. I miss my family, but I cannot think about that with the presence of MLK.
