REFLECTIONS FROM OUR TALK WITH Bruce Boynton
By Joe
Bruce Boynton, the son of Amelia Boynton, was a Civil Rights activist during the movement in the 60s and started the Freedom Riders movement. Bruce was arrested for refusing to leave a whites-only food stand at an interstate bus stop, sparking the movement. He talked about how all people, mostly children, should not learn their history from history books or from a history teacher; he said that you should learn your history from your ancestors, like your mom or your grandmother. The reason he said this is because you should learn the history that they had experienced in their own life and can recall from the first-person point of view, which makes sure that the stories that don’t appear in history books get passed down. Bruce was amazing for me and my class to meet because he talked about his life and the fight for equality.
