HERON HERO
By Finn
This is a photo of a heron statue on a metal tower in Montgomery. The metal had obviously been there for a while because it was rusting and turning that yellowish-brown color. The tower is actually square with a thin halo around it. The statue was in a river running alongside Montgomery. It was a good 30 feet tall, but I focused on just a portion of it.
The original photo was taken during an evening sunset shooting session which added a unique light to it. It was originally taken in full color with a background, but the intended photo was a silhouette of the statue. The background is edited to have a slightly black vignette and a deeper blue with more contrast. I went for a more dramatic look with this, rendering it less of a detailed photo. It also goes to show that you don't need big subjects to make meaningful impacts. To me, it symbolizes the light at the end of the tunnel. Even though the subject is black. The tunnel symbolizes the struggle for civil rights. The heron represents Dr. King standing proud amidst a sea of contrasting people, or in this case, colors.
