FROM SADNESS TO HOPE

I took this photo on the Deep South Trip, on May 16, 2019. Metal plaques hang from the ceiling with names of people who had been lynched. Each plaque represents a county. As you continue to walk through the museum, the plaques get higher, so by the end you have to look up almost like you're seeing someone being hung.
I took this photo at the legacy museum in hopes of capturing how powerful it was and what the words represented. When I edited this photo, I hoped to make it more dramatic by enhancing the light. I made the far side of the plaque lighter and the near side darker to affect the viewers’ depth perception. On top of enhancing the light, I decided to make it black and white to bring a serious tone to the image.
